Crudelia
Her distinctive smell, perfume and cigarette mixed together, announces her. There is no place left to hide. When she walks in the office, people avert their eyes and stare at their keyboards. They work humouring her mood swings; she picks her friends on a whim and is as quick in choosing her victims and enemies. When she calls you in her office, you never know whether you’ll be praised or criticized. You stand there, interlaced fingers and sweaty palms, unable to look her in the eyes. She takes her time, sizes you up while you are left wondering if the price you’re paying to learn from the best isn’t too steep. When you hold her gaze, she hints a smile, whispers a “well done”, and allows you to go back to work.

Pinocchio
New interns feed the queue outside my door. They’re idealistic and full of hopes but have no clue about what they’re getting themselves into. They are a tireless source of labour, willing to work in exchange for experience, travelling expenses and meagre salaries.
Youth is their virtue, it makes them flexible and naïve, but when age and experience add up, I greet them with a handshake and let them go without skipping a beat. I’m aware they call me Mangiafuoco. They whisper among themselves: “We deserve more, we want more.” But when I walk by their desks and clear my voice, their clean faces widen in great and eager smiles.

Straight back, chin out: you study her every move, ready to remind her of her rightful place. You know what she thinks of you. She looks at you and does not understand how you came to power She will never know what it means to live as if the world belonged to her, to craftily pull the strings: a daughter to be married to a tycoon, another one the leader of a company and she, your stepdaughter, relegated in a menial job.
